here are a few lesson plan examples
1. Lets sort colors!!
Curriculum area- math
Idea- children will different objects consisting of different colors, we will sort the objects
into groups of colors.
Materials needed- sheets of colored paper, materials of different colors ex. Colored
blocks, colored bears
For ages- 2-4
Opening statement- okay guys were going to sort these blocks into their color groups!
Early- children will match their blocks and place them onto the correct colored paper
with assistance from friends, or the teacher
Middle- children can sort blocks on their own, placing each block on the corridating
sheet of paper
Later- children can sort their blocks, help others, name colors
End- we will go over the colors we saw, how many groups there are, how many blocks
are on each sheet of paper
Follow up- counting blocks, sorting by size, sorting by shape
2. How are you feeling?
Curriculum area- social and emotional
Idea- children will be shown different images of faces with different feelings, they can
point out what each face is feeling and relate to how they feel, they can recreate these
faces in the handheld mirror
Materials needed- emotion cards, handheld mirror
For ages- 3-5
Opening statement- lets look in the mirror at our faces, lets look at the faces on the cards
Early- saying which face card is happy, which face card is sad, looking at their face in
mirror
Middle- naming multiple emotion cards, replicating those faces in the mirror
Later- shareing how they feel, which card they relate too, sharing how they have felt
throughout the day
End- talking about how everyone is feeling today and why
Follow up- tracking feelings
3. Lets move like an animal
Curriculum area- physical development, gross motor skills
Idea- having animal cards, children can take turns picking a card from the stack and then
stating how that animal moves, then as a group we all move like that animal
Materials needed- animal cards, or animal figures, open area
For ages- 2-5
Opening statement- were all going to move like animals
Early- children can pick card, may need help identifying the movement
Middle- can pick card and state how the animal moves
Later- can state how the animal moves, and show us how the animal moves ex. The
bunny hops, then starts hopping
End- sitting down as a group to calm and going over our favorite movements
Follow up- reading an animal book
4. What will happen in the story
Curriculum area- language, literacy
Idea- children can predict what will happen next in a book
Materials needed- book
For ages- 3-5
Opening statement- were going to read this story and then we are going to think about
what we think will happen next before finishing the story
Early- pointing to pictures, relating to what has allready happened
Middle- making own unique predictions
Later- stating why they think that will happen next
End- talking about story telling, how our predications went
Follow up- drawing their predictions out
5. Lets count our snacks
Curriculum area- math
Idea- children can count their crackers, and see how math can be found all around us
Materials needed- snack, preferbly a dry not sticky one like crackers or rasins
For ages- 3-5
Opening statement- we are going to count our snacks
Early- counting as they can, assistance if they get stuck on a number
Middle- counting independently, using fingers to point as they count
Later- adding and subtracting the snacks
End- eating our snacks
Follow up- talking about our favorite snacks
6. Sink or float (one of my favs)
Curriculum area- science
Idea- taking materials and predicting if they sink or float, then adding into a bin of water
and testing our predictions
Materials needed- different objects, clear bin, water
For ages- 3-5
Opening statement- showing children objects, what do you think will sink or float
Early- watching and observing, placing an object in the water
Middle- making predictions of what will sink or float
Later- explaining and noticing why some things sink and some things float
End- going over what we saw
Follow up- sorting the objects into groups of what sank and what floated
7. Shape hunt (another fav)
Curriculum area- math
Idea- children will be shown a shape, and told the name of the shape, and then go and
find an object of that shape in the classroom
Materials needed- shapes on paper
For ages- 3-5
Opening statement- im going to show you guys a shape, and then you will be able to get
up and look around the classroom to find this shape, when youve found yours please
come back and sit at the carpet
Early- using the paper to compare and help find shape, being able to name one shape
Middle- knowing multiple shapes, finding on their own
Later- helping friends find shapes, finding multiple objects of the shape, comparing their
object with others
End- sitting down and going over what shapes were easy to find, and what shapes were
harder to find
Follow up- grouping shapes by different categories like color, or size
8. Name tracing
Curriculum area- literacy, fine motor skills
Idea- children will be given a laminated paper with their name written in full, in dots, and
then a blank area at the end, children can trace their name and then practice writing on
their own
Materials needed- laminated name sheets, dry erase markers, eraser
For ages- 4-5
Opening statement- we each have a sheet with our names on it, lets trace out names
Early- going over the solid letters of their name, then the dotted lines
Middle- can write their name in the blank area, refering to the letters above
Later- writing name on their own!
End- going over everyones names together
Follow up- having children label classroom objects
9. Yoga
Curriculum area- health, physical deveoplment, gross motor skills
Idea- i will lead the children through yoga poses
Materials needed- large open area, calming music
For ages- 3-5
Opening statement- we are going to do yoga to calm our bodies
Early- doing some movements
Middle- doing all of the movements
Later- leading the class
End- sitting together to calm and close our eyes
Follow up- breathing exercises
10. Color mixing
Curriculum area- art
Idea- mixing colors to make new colors
Materials needed- paint colors, paint brushes, paper, smocks
For ages- 3-5
Opening statement- we are going to mix colors and see what happens
Early- having paint on a paper in a plastic bag
Middle- mixing colors and noticing changes
Later- identifying which colors make new colors
End- talking about what we noticed and what colors are used to make other colors, what
happens when too many colros get mixed
Follow up- naming the primary and secondary colors
11. Making patterns
Curriculum area- math
Idea- children will make patterns, follow patterns, and learn what makes a pattern
Materials needed- any materials like blocks, colored cubes, magnatiles
For ages- 3-5
Opening statement- lets make patterns
Early-following a pattern that has been started ex. Red, blue, red, blue, ...
Middle- making own patterns, more complex patterns, ex. Red, yellow, orange, red,
yellow, ...
Later- creating own patterns, sharing their patterns
End- sharing and noticing everyones patterns
Follow up- finding patterns around the classroom
12. 5 sences
Curriculum area- science
Idea- we will explore all 5 of our sences with different objects
Materials needed- sensory items for each sence, (bells, a flower, a piece of paper, a
blanket, a piece of candy, etc)
For ages- 3-5
Opening statement- what are our 5 sences, how do we use them
Early- touching and exploring different objects
Middle- naming what sense is being used for different objects
Later- describing waht they see, hear, smell
End- concluding what the 5 senses are and how they are used
Follow up- continuing to talk about our senses in daily life
13. Hot potatoe
Curriculum area- physical development
Idea- we will pass a stuffed animal or ball around going with the music
Materials needed- ball, beanbag, stuffy, music
For ages- 3-5
Opening statement- we will pass this around while the music plays and when the music
stops who ever has it will say their name
Early- children pass the object with reminders
Middle- children follow the rules
Later- helping and encouraging others
End- talk about taking turns
Follow up- asking a different question to the one with the object
14. Nature walk
Curriculum area- science, nature
Idea- going out and exploring nature
Materials needed- baggies for children to collect items, magnifying glasses
For ages- 4-6
Opening statement- lets go take a walk outside, we can collect items in our baggie and
look at nautre with our magnifying glasses
Early- looking and observing
Middle- naming things that they see, hear, or notice
Later- comparing and contrasting objects they notice
End- looking at and comparing what everyone has in their baggies
Follow up- create a chart of what children found
15. Planting seeds
Curriculum area- science and nature
Idea- we will plant seeds together and watch how the seeds grow
Materials needed- clear cups, seeds, soil, tape, water
For ages- 3-5
Opening statement- together we are going to plant these seeds and see how they grow
and change each week
Early- flilling cup with soil, putting tape on cup for name and date
Middle- planting seed with guidance from teacher
Later- plant seed, predicting what will happen next
End- placing cups on a windowsill, continue to check on cups, watching growth,
watering our cups
Follow up- making a group growth chart, adding a growth check to morning meeting
Lesson plan review- The lesson plans that I have shared showcase my understanding of early childhood education. As well as my understanding for age-appropriate play and education. Play is a huge part of learning in early childhood education, and I strive for all of my lesson plans to include learning and teaching through play.
